Rowan The Strange Book Cover

rowan1

The cover for Julie Hearn’s book Rowan The Strange published by Oxford University Press is based on a photo I took several years ago of my youngest son.  It’s always great to get an image published somewhere different and while I’ve had my own books published and have had a number of writer portraits used for book covers this is the first book cover from a photograph of mine. The image was chosen from a British/Spanish agency I have some photos with, Arcangel. Here’s arecent review of the book from the Guardian. I’m not sure if a North American edition has been released but the British edition is easily available/ordered through your local bookstore.

Another photo of my son was used on a Dutch version of a Hugo Hamilton book. I’m not sure what the English version was titled as my Dutch is nonexistent.

Robert Bringhurst – The Surface Of Meaning – Books and Book Design in Canada

I’ve had this book The Surface Of Meaning by noted typographer/poet/writer Robert Bringhurst and published by CCSP Press for several months now and wanted to post about it for a while but wasn’t quite sure how to present it. In the end I thought a selection of pages from the book might be the simplest and best way to highlight this outstanding volume.

To Trim Or Not To Trim -Your Book Edges That Is

Bookninja sent us to this post from Powell’s Books on fore-edges. Fore-edges are the ends of the book pages, sometimes they are trimmed evenly and sometimes not. Sometimes the edges have gilt applied, are marbled or stained. Fascinating stuff for those of us (geeks) who admire books for their design and look as well as for their literary content. Check out an earlier post on fore-edge painting.
